UNITED STATES NATIONAL DOUBLES AUSTRALIANS WIN BOTH THEIR MATCHES AMERICAN DAVIS CUP TEAM IN GOOD FORM By Telegraph.— Press Association. -oo?ybight. Boston, August 20. In the national doubles played at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, J. O. Anderson and J. B. Hawkes (Australia) defeated de Turenne and Johns (Seattle), 2—6, 6—3, 6—3, 6—2 I. D. Mclnnes and R. E. Schlesinger defeated Curley and Shaw, 6 —4, 3 —6, 2-6; 6—3, 6—2. (Exclusive to Australian Press Association) Chestnut Hills, August 20. In the first round of tho national doubles, J. 0. Anderson and J. B. Hawkes defeated de Turenne and Johns. The Australians were .slow to settle down, but their opponents, who are hard-hitting players, struck their games straight away and knocked the Australians off the court in the first set, allowing them only the second and third games. The Australians, however, got going in the second set, Hawkes playing his usual, consistent game, returning the service excellently. Anderson returned the service also for many clean placements up the centre of the court, and was, in addition, brilliant overhead, getting wonderful angles. The Americans finally broke down, not being able to stand the pace, and fell into errors. I. D. Mclnnes and R. E. Schlesinger defeated Curley and Shaw. The Americans started badly, and the Australians won the first set on . their errors, but Mclnnes was weak in the second and third sets. The Americans played excellent tennis, rushing the net and smashing brilliantly Schlesinger was weak on the backhand, and Mclnnes had no pace on his volleys, netting the backhand. Mclnnes settled down and played better in the last two sets, returning the service and smashing well. Schlesinger both served well, drove well off the forehand, and was tossing well on the backhand. The Americans fell into errors in the last two sets and played erratically. W. T. Tilden and B. I. C. Norton (of South Africa) defeated Davies and Neer, 4 —6, 6 —3, 7—-5, 6—3. The former started erratically. allowing the younger players to win the first set. Norton was erratic, missing easy smashes, hut settled down at the end of the second set, and played splendid tennis, returning the service excellently. Tilden was brilliant towards the end. W. M. Johnston and Griffen defeated Barr and Jester, 6—3, 6 —l, B—6. The former pair were too fast and consistent. The third set saw good tennis. Dean Mathew and Vincent Richards defeated Howell and Hammond, 6—l, 6—l, 6—o. The former pair played brilliant and consistent tennis. Williams and Washbum defeated Dr. Leonard Darby (Sydney) and C. Fisher. 6—l, 6—2, 6 —2. The game was brilliant. - • . . The American Davis Cup players played up to form, and can be expected to show their usual brilliancy. They may still considered formidable
