FOREST FIRES
LARGE AREAS IN FRANCE DEVASTATED NUMBERS OF PEOPLE MISSING By Telegraph.— Press Association. —COPYRIGHT Paris, August 18. Large numbers of troops are engaged in fighting forest fires, which have already devastated large areas in the Var coast districts, in the south-east of France. Tlie thermal station of Mandelieu was devastated. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. (Rec. August 20, 7.40 p.m.) Paris, August 19. The forest fires destroyed the Cannes Golf Club and racecourse buildings. and railway communications are broken. Numbers of people- are missing. V Refugees are pouring into Cannes. Troops continue strenuously to fight the flames, which are rapidly spreading. The roads are thronged with people pushing carts laden with their belongings.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
