McCleary recovering from KNOCK-OUT BLOW. Br Telegraph.— Press Association. Christchurch. August 15. AlcCleary was a long-time in coming round after his knock-out by Heeney last night, and was admitted to a private hospital. He was reported to be making a good recovery this morning. [A telegram published yesterday stated that in the fourteenth round Heeney sent his opponent down for with a left and two rights to the jaw. McCleary on rising was again floored. He regained his feet, but was very groggy, and Heeney then put him right out.] FIRPO KNOCKS OUT WEINERT. Philadelphia, August 13. Firpo knocked out Charles Weinert in the second round of an eight-round bout, and thereby preserves nis reputation as a wild-hitting slogger who is dangerous to his opponents rather through brute power than through ring technique. In the opening of the second, round, Firpo rushed Weinert to the rope, clinched, and drove a savage right to the jaw, felling Weinert for the count of eight. Weinert made three plucky attempts to regain his footing, only to be sent down by Firpo’s right. Firpo’s victory has assured his meeting Dempsey on September 14. That match would probably not have been fought had Firpo lost to-night.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
