“A CLEAN BREAST”
UNLAWFUL SALE OF LIQUOR. “The barman made a clean breast of things to the officers who visited the premises,” said Sub-Inspector Cummings in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when four men were charged with breaches of the Licensing Act. They were: Patrick William Corby, licensee of the Cambridge Hotel, who was charged with selling liquor after hours and exposing/liquor for sal© in an hotel during closed hours; William Joseph Bums, barman of the Cambridge Hotel (two charges of unlawfully supplying liquor); and Alexander Johnson and Frederick Stapleton (charged with being found on licensed premises after hours' Sub-Inspector Cummings said that when tho premises were visited by Sergeant Moriarity and Constable McNamara on the afternoon of May 20, six men, two «f whom were boarders, were found in the bar. The barman made a clean breast of things, and explained that the defendant Johnson was in the habit of having his meals at the hotel, and when he had askeo for a drink for himself and his friend he (the barman) had supplied the liquor, thinking at the time that he was acting in accordance with the law. The licensee was resting upstairs nt. the time, and did not know anything about tho matter until it was mentioned to him by the police. He was nevertheless responsible for the action of his servants. Mr. Corby had been in business for the past 30 years and had never been before tho Court previously. The Magistrate (Mr. E. Page, S.M.) recorded convictions in each case. He fined Burns £5 and costs on each charge; Corby, £2 and costs on each count; and Johnson and Stapleton each £1 and costs.
