MUSIC IN SCHOOLS

A FORWARD MOVE. The executive council of the Wellington Competitions Society has for some time past been considering ways and means of encouraging music in the schools, and at a meeting of the executive on Tuesday night, it was decided io make a practical move in the matter, by agreeing to donate to the Wellington Education Board a sum of £25 annually for throe years, as a subsidy towards the salary of a singing master to organise and take complete control of singing in the schools under the jurisdiction of the board, conditional on the board or Education Department making a grant for the same object. A sub-commit-teo consisting of Messrs. E. Palliser, F. G. Cray and C. Bary, was set up to confer with other musical organisations in the city with a view to securing their co-operation in this matter.
