His Honour Mr. Justice Reed will leave to-morrow for New Plymouth, and will visit Wanganui before returning to Wellington. . Mr. Justice Frazer will return to the city to-ilay, and will spend the weekend here.
Captain C. McDonald is retiring from the position of marine superintendent of the Union Steam Ship Company, and Captain C. J. Foster will succeed him. Colonel (temporary Brigadier-Gen-eral) Sir D. J. McGavin. C.M.G., D. 5.0., M.D., F.R.C.S., Eng., Honorary Surgeon to the Governor-General, has been promoted to the rank of major-general. Air. G. L. Jenness, who died yesterday morning at Belmont Road, ‘Lower Hutt, was one of Wellington’s oldest business mon. Born in Wellington 77 years ago, he served his time at the watchmaking trade, and afterwards founded the business now carried on by Messrs. Rash and Gooder, which was at that time conducted on the site now occupied by Cooper’s Buildings in Willis Street. The late Mr. Jenness retired from business in 1891, and had since been living quetly at *thg homo he ckitaiblished in Lower Hutt. A prominent Recha.bite, he had the honour of being the oldest member of the Order in the Dominion. Ho is survived by a widow, five daughters, and five sons. The daughters are: Mrs. H. Whitehead, of Palmerston North: Mrs. A. Ballantyne who spent several years on the mission field, and now residing at Lower Hutt; Mrs. D. Hartley, of the Rotorua district; Mrs. S. P. Skinner, of Woodville; and Airs. H. R. Robinson, of Whakatane. Thp sons are: Messrs. G. A. Jenness, of Lower Hutt; W. L. Jenness, Petone ; Fred Jenness, of Lower Hutt; Diamond Jenness, the well-known scientist /who took part in the Steffetnson Polar exploration expedition. and is now at Victoria Museum, Canada; and Leonard Jenness, Petone. The late Air. Jenness had been ailing for about a fortnight.

Residents of Otaki have decided to erect a war memorial in memory of soldiers from Otaki. The memorial will be an obelisk of grey Scotch granite, 14ft. in height. The names of those who died and or returned men will find a place, on the. memorial. Mrs. Mcßeath has donated £lOO, and Mr. J. P. Brandon £25 towards the cost. News has just been received that M>’. John Aitken Allan, M.A., of Wellington. who is studying at Now- College, Edinburgh, has been awarded the Deals, Prize (New Testament) and tba Davidson Prize (Old Testament). The Hon. T). H. Guthrie, Minister of Lands and Railways, who is under treatment at the Bowen Street Private Hospital, will probably take a trip fo Honolulu shortly for health reasons.
Messrs. C. Rhodes, W. B. Leyland, W. J. Holdsworth, and A. Eady, four Auckland delegates to the Rotarv Convention at St. Louis, Missouri, left by the Niagara on Tuesday. They were accompanied by their wives. Mr. 0. A. Banner, the new headmaster of the Motueka District High School, and for twelve rears agricultural instructor in the Wanganui district. .left with Mrs. Banner and family for Motueka by the Nikau last night. Mr. Banner was presented with a gold watoh, chain, and sovereign case at Feilding. and Mrs. Banner was given a silver afternoon tea set. At Wanganui. the Education Board members presented Mr. Banner with a leather suit case.
The Right Rev. the Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott) will visit Christchurch this month to attend the Church Congress. He will also be present the Canterbury’ College jubilee on May 13.
Tho Rev. R. Franklyn, formerly of Wellington, has obtained leave of absence from his diocese to enable him to visit England. The Colonial Auxiliary Forces’ Officers 7- Decoration. has bten awarded to Honorary’ Captain R. M. Irvine, of the Reserve of Officers.
The appointment of Mr. F. B. LJameson, ns Clerk of the Magistrate’s Court at Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt, and ,I*etone, is gazetted.
