AUTOMOBILE CLUB
CITY TRAFFIC REGULATION PETONE RAILWAY CROSSING
A further batch of 29 new members were elected at the monthly’ meeting of the Automobile Club Committee yesterday afternoon.
The Rangitikei County Council wrote asking for support in its protest against the recent motor recordbrei|k>ng between Wellington and. Auckland, which it considered constitute a grave danger to other Toad travellers and cause unnecessary damage to the roads. The secretary stated that several complaints had been made at the club office by persons who had encountered some of the recent motor record breakers on the road and had narrowly escaped accident. It was decided to inform the Rangitikei Council that the club strongly disapproved of, and had never supported, motor racing on the roads. The town clerk wrote stating that negotiations were in hand for taking overthe ■ now-closed road round Point Halswell from the Defence Department, and that a considerable amount of survey had to be done before the transfer could take place. Members of the committee expressed the opinion that the reply did not indicate that the Ctiy Council was actually doing anything in the matter, and it was decided to write again, asking for an approximate date for the reopening of the road. Another letter from the town clerk was to the effect that the rule of the road was to be strictly enforced in Jervois Quay (the club had complained of slowing moving traffic blocking the whole.road); that the weight of motor lorries laden was to be restricted to 10 tons, and the overall width to eight feet; that loads must be roped in future; and that all vehicles, slowmoving or otherwise, must carry tail lights. The\ committee decided to send a letter expressing appreciation of the City Council’s action in so promptly giving effect to the suggestions recently put forward by the club on these matters. The president (Mr. C. M. Banks) and Mr. F. Goldberg were appointed delegates to represent the club in connection with the proposed Wellington gala, but it was pointed out that the committee had no intention of asking members of the club to provide anything in the way of a free taxi service during the gala. . » Advice was received from the Motor Traders’ Association that the matter of co-operating in a motor reliability trial in Wellington had been referred to the Wellington branch of the association. and stating that the motor trade generally was keenly interested in such trials.
The General Manager/ of Railways wrote Inat the club’s request for the stationing of a crossing-keeper at the Petone railway crossing had been carefully considered and could not be acceded to. Mr. Banks stated that h° had been going pretty fully into the level crossing question, and had intended to present the committee with the information he had collected at next meeting.
