THEFT OF SHIPPING COMPANY’S PROPERTY.

That the theft of property belonging to the Union Steam Ship Company was becoming very prevalent was indicated. bv Chief-Detective Kemp in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when a fireman named Robert Runciman Morrison appeared on a charge of stealing articles valued at £5. The accused, it was explained, had joined, the Mara ma in June last, and bad helped himself before his discharge to a carpet, a rug, three towels, five knives, and a teaspoon. There had been no traco of the propertv until Thursday last, when Detective Tric tlobank recovered it all at the accused s house at 57 Kent Terrace,, It was not a case of cargo broaching, but one of straight-out theft. The accused had nothin" to say in extenuation, and the Magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt. S.M.) sentenced him one month’s imprisonment.
