STEALS HIS FATHER’S CHAFF. When Harold Andrews, alias Edward Morris, conceived the idea of converting five bags from" his father’s store of chaff into the wherewithal for the purchase of liquor, he presumed a trifle on his filial rights, and yesterday morning, as the outcome of an information laid by his brother, he appeared before Air. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court. Andrews entered the dock in company with Arthur Stevens and they pleaded guilty to stealing the chaff, which was valued at £1 ss.

Senior-Sergeant Lander said that the men had removed five bags of chaff, disposing of them to a carrier for £l. Both accused had been before the Court previously. When arrested Stevens was .suffering from the effects of excessive drinking. “Andrews is in a peculiar position,” stated his counsel (Mr. N. A. Foden). “He is the brother of the man who laid the information and son of the owner of the chaff. He was employed by his father, and, meeting with an accident in the river at Belmont, he came to town ” His Worship: And hit upon this scheme of raising the wind Mr. Foden: Yes. ... I understand that Andrew's brother has signified his willingness to withdraw the information. His Worship: That is a matter for the Court. ... He was drunk and went into hi.s father’s place to steal the chaff and lured Stevens into it. Accused were both fined £2 and costs, with the inption of spending ■seven days in gaol.
