STRUCK BY MOTOR-CAR

KARORI BOY’S TRAGIC DEATH

A DANGEROUS CORNER A motor fatality occurred at Karori last evening at the spot where the double tramlines take up a large part of tho road at the turn near the cemetery, when Herbert Johnston, aged 13, was knocked clown by a- motorist who was endeavouring to avoid passing tramcars. The lad was standing on the footpath opposite the store at about 5.30 p.m. when he was struck. The driver of the motor-car was Mr. F. F. Bailey, of Wallace Street,. Karori, Who was taking a party, of friends home from town. “I was just opposite the cemetery, ’’ said Mr. Bailey to a Dominion reporter, "when two men crossed the road In front of me. I pulled out to come round on the side rounding tho corner to Johnstone Street. I had just pulled over when a special tramcar (I had just passed another on the road, and was not expecting it) came round the corner. To avoid this I had to take to the footpath.” Mr. Bailey, who lives next door to the boy's parents, was deeply grieved by the fatality. "The boy sustained a severely fractured skull, and was dead when Dr. I’attie arrived.

The corner where the accident occurred is a particularly dangerous one for, all traffic, as there is little space to spare when tramcars are passing. Tho turn in the road is fairly sharp.
