TRANSFORMER STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

AN ALARMING EXPERIENCE BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. Christchurch, April 9. Residents of Lyttelton were awakened about 1 o’clock this morning by what they thought to be a tremendous thunderclap, but which was in reality the explosion of a transformer at Diamond Harbour. The electric current comes in there at 3000 volts, and is reduced to 250 volts- Lightning struck the high tension side of the transformer, and an explosion followed, the lights going out at the same time. The concussion caused some of the houses in the vicinity .to rock alarmingly, especially that occupied by Mr. W. C. Cleary. The full extent of the damage has not yet been ascertained, but the transformer which has been destroyed will cost from £75 to £BO to replace.
