THE RACING WORLD

UNCLE NED WINS AT AVONDALE

TRACK WORK AT TRENTHAM

(By Tub Watcher.) R. J. Mason, who was booked to leave Lyttelton last night with Qgpidon, Pluto, Parody, and Vespucci, has postponed, his trip until to-night. Mr. Roy Sellers, secretary of the New Zealand Racing Conference, is recovering from an operation for appendicitis. He will be in Wellington on Thursday next on conference business, but races will be beyond him for a few weeks yet. Murihaupo was scratched for all engagements at the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting at 9.30 a.m. yesterday. Ladies and children will be admitted free to the Wellington Racing Club’s picnic grounds in the outside enclosure on Thursday and Saturday, provided they do not travel by the special race trains. F. D. Jones is due to arrive from the south this morning with Prosperity, The Reaver-, and Urgency.

The race for the North Island Challenge Stakes promises to be very interesting. Murihaupo’s withdrawal leaves Viewpoint, Gay Juliet, Rose Martian and Queen March to represent the juveniles against the older horses. Queen March is the most seasoned of tlie two-year-olds, but on the Avondale Stakes form it may take another youngster to keep Thespian and Pluto busy. Gay Juliet and Rose Martian are the onlv two-year-olds to escape a penalty, while Queen March. Thespian, and Pluto have earned the full penalty of 141 b.

It seems to be the popular impression that a sprinter usually wins the Thompson Handicap. Those who incline to that opinion have plenty of material to choose from in Thursday’s race. In the last twelve years, Equitas (1911), Gipsy Belle (1912), Oxenhope (1916), and Arrowsmith (1920) would seem to bo the only winners that can accurately bo termed sprinters, Three-years-olds have not a good record in this race, winning only four times since the institution of the race in 1892. The last to win was Rouen, in 1921, and he broke a long eequence of three-year-old failures since Aborigine, in 1909. The three-year-olds in this year’s event are: Gold Light, King’s Trumpeter, Highland, and Lovesign. None of the quartet will be carrying as much as Rouen did (Bst. 31b.) when he won.

Among those due with horses at Trentham to-morrow are R. Knox, J. Farmer, F. Jensen, B. Burgess, P. Hazlenian, and W. Garrett. R. Gooseman is at present handling a nice filly by Crown Imperial II —Ind:a. India is a full-sister to Indigo (Mystification—-Mungista), who deadheated with Warstep in the New Zealand Cup of 1914. The filly is the property of Mr. P. Hunter. War Loan and Empyrean, who have both been paid up for in the First H’gh Weight Handicap on Thursday, will be bracketed on the machine. At Feilding on the second day over hqrdlbs, one mile and a half, War Loan, was called upon to give his stable mate three stone, all but a pound. At Trentham, on the flat, War Loan gives Empyrean 81b. Empyrean lias <Jone a good deal of racing this serfson without much success, but War Loan has some fine performances to his credit. He looked well at Feilding and reports from Wanganui indicate that ho is in good fettle, and likely to make the trip.

Millingerer, War Loan, and Empyrean ibad a working gallop over a mile on the Wanganui track the other day, and thev finished in that order in Imlii.. 45sec. War Loan was at a disadvantage in weight, compared with the other two.

Civility is reported to be in good farm and doing good track work at Wanganui. She is engaged at Awapuni next week. Tn responding to the toast of his health, when entertaining the Press in the Press Room to celebrate the victory of Queen March in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, on Laster Monday, Mr. Eliot R- Da™ expressed regret that Razzle Dazzle had been unable to fulfil her engagement He sympathised with Mr. Hazlett, the owner ot the filly, which he recognised was a high-class one, but ho considered Queen March was better, and he would have enjoyed a meeting between the pair. He was extremely sorry that such did not come about, and in her absence Queen March had been successful in winning the race for Auckland against the southerners, although it had to be done by the aid of a southern trainer and rider. Stony, who ran second to Blairmoro in the Rous Handicap on Saturday at flie A.J.C. meeting in Sydney, is trained by the ex-Highden mentor George Price. When Trespass ran third in tho Dangar Handicap in Sydney on Saturday it was his first time in a place since the Wanganui Jockey Clubs spring meeting last September.

Coroglen has been destroyed as the result of a recent injury at the Aucklariu Club’s races. —Press Assn. Kenilworth dropped dead yesterday after being exercised at Takapuna. — Press Assn. TRENTHAM TRACK WORK Monday, April 9. Tlie weather was cold and bleak, with frequent hail and rain showers this morning, when the tracks were opened. No work of importance ivas done, the going being very sodden. The tracks available were the new grass and the sand. J. 11. Jefferd and J. H. Prosser were the only two out brfore breakfast. Rapine, Grotesque, aml King s Trumpeter were given solid work. Kino’s Trumpeter moved freely over a circuit at three-quarter pace. . Parorangi and Blackhead worked in company. The former! is being well eared for by his trainer, and it all goes well in the meantime may improve on his Tauherenikau performances, where he won two races. After breakfast it was a case ot dodging the heavy showers. All the horsTes at present in quarters on the course wore given pace work. Kahikatea did not appear to be at home in the heavy going. . Mireusonta was ridden exercise this morning, and the other members of 1. Lloyd’s team were worked. Owing to the state of the tracks and the weather conditions a fair amount of road and hill work is being done.

(By Glencoe.) While attending the Auckland meeting Mr. M. Carney purchased the English filly Podokes (Rock Flint —Galloping Girl), who has been handed to J. S. Jamieson to prepare at Woodville. The trainer named is at present breaking in the full sister to Gav Juliet for Mr Carney. Several offers have been received for the yearling since the two-year-old has shown such promise. Royal Blood is engaged in both the Thompson Handicap and the Railway Handicap at Trentham on Thursday, but it is thought that he is most likely to run in the mile race, as his trainer tried him over a mile before he left Ellerslie.

\The Easter Handicap winner, Rosedny, who is engaged in the Thompson Handicap, has been, most consistent m his races lately. After being narrowly defeated by Gold Light at Trentham ho went on and won tho Dunedin Cup, ran second to Scrimmage on the concluding day, and then won tho Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. F. Davis arrived at Trentham yesterday wtih the horses he raced at Ellerslie while Highland and Orofino were brought down from Woodville to await his arrival. Lucius will not be a runner in tho St. Leger. which will most likely be a three-horse race. Visiting sportsmen are already putting in an appearance in th& city, and there is every indication that given fine weather the autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club will be well tip to tho standard of previous, years in the matter of attendance, while the fields are of record size.

This week will be a 'busy one for the officials of the Racing Conference, for in addition to the sitting of the Licensing Committee, there are several appeals to be beard by the judges appointed by tho president of the conference. The yearling full sister to Rational and The Monk, purchased by a northern sportsman, is to race as Lady Isinglass.

There is a likelihood of the local light-weight, D. Butler, who is apprenticed to J. Ayres, getting the mount on the Riccarton-trained Boadicea. in the Thompson Handicap. Scion, winner of the New Zealand Cup and the Auckland Cup, .is to figure as a sprinter on the opening day at Trentham. The fact that he has always been a very slow. beginner in his races, does not make his chance in the Railway Handicap very promising, but the gallop should keep him right for the longer race on the second day. Mr. r E H. Lowry has already claimed names for his rising two-year-olds, and they arc as follow:—B. f. by Finland—War Scare, Table Talk;.ch. t, bv Finland—Desert Gold, Desert Land; br c. All Black—Aurarius, Nmger Minstrel; b. c. by Kilbroney-En Parole, Phoenix Park; blk. f. by Finland —D’Oro, Orozina. The guarantors of the recently liquidated Morrinsville Racing Club recently urged upon the Prime Minister ana the Minister of’lnternal Affairs to grant a race day at Hamilton or elsewhere to relieve the burden of the guarantors, who are responsible for £9OO each. The Ministers have stated their intention of .giving the request every support. Sir George Clifford, chairman of the Racing Conference, has written to the club to say that he will do all he can in support of the request.
