WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB
The annual general meeting of the Wellington South Club was held in St. Thomas’s Club-room on Thursday evening, when there was a good attendance of members. Mr. W. Berry (president) occupied th® cnair. Mr. H. IL Hart (hon. secretary and treasurer) presented the eighteenth annual report and balance sheet. The report showed that the club’s annual handicap tourney was carried off by H. J. Thompson, who thus repeated his triumph of 1913. IV. B. Clark, ilio runner-up, finished up half a point behind Mr. Thompson. The club los£ its annual match to tho Working Men’s Club, but won the annual tworound fixture against the Masterton C.C., which was played during the Labour Day week-end. The match with Ngaio is incomplete. It depends on an unfinished game, and may end in a tie. The results of the club’s senior and junior league matches are placed on record. The annual allWellington Problem Solving contest saw 14 competitors tackling the twelve two-move problems, submitted by the Good Companion Club. D. Purchas tied for first place with S. Faulknor, 1 with the good tally of ten correct solutions, making the fourth year in succession that ho has headed the local prize list. The club was once more very ably represented by A. W. Gyles at the annual New Zealand Championship Congress, which was held in Christchurch during the Christmas-New Year holidays. Mr. Gyles tied with J. B. Dunlop, of Oamaru, for the championship, but lost in the play-off. It is hoped that perseverance will have its reward, and that Mr. Gyles will be even more successful in the near future. Thp club’s thanks are conveyed to Mr. H. F. Wigram (president of the N.Z.C.A.) for donating a photo of the championship competitors, and to him and the Mnstcrton Chess Club for kind hospitality extended to the club’s repre•entalives. Sympathetic reference in made to the loss sustained by .Mr. H. E. Ashby in the death of his wife. The report concludes by stressing the need for better attendance, and an increased membership. The balance sheet shows that there will be a small credit balance after meeting three liabilities. The report and balance sheet were unanimously, on the motion of the chairman, who usefully drew attention to the links in the club’s chain that need strengthening. The following officers for the ensuing year wore elected unanimously:—President, Mr. W. Berry’; vice-presidents. Dr. Kemp, Messrs. H. Welton, D. Purcfias, A. Clark, W. B. Clark, and F. K.
