FARMERS AND TAXATION
Sir,—As a farmer, let me warn other farmers not to be led astray by Mr. Hunt’s sophistries re taxation. Although the New. Zealand system ot company taxation is not in accordance with the tenets of the majority ot political economists, there is much to be said in favour of its justice ana equity, and the war has upset many of the tenets of political economists. According to Mr. Hunt, no company can carry on a business unless it makes 12 per cent. How many farmers make that? The farmers do not nay the innocent companies represented’ by Mr. Hunt £3,000,000 of extra money to meet their taxation. Eiery person who buys an ounce of sugar, tea, or any other art’cle of consumption is assisting Mr. Hunt’s companies to par their taxation, and we have a very excellent example, of a sales tax paid by everyone.-I am, White Rock, April 1, 1923.
