The Minister of Lands and Railways (the Hon. D. 11. Guthrie) is at present at Rotorua, for health reasons. He wifi attend a meeting of the Tongariro National Park Board on April 12 at Waimarino. returning to Wellington the following day. The Minister of Defence (Sir Heaton Rhodes) returned from the South Island yesterday. The Minister of Education and Health (the lion. C. J. Parr) left for the south last evening. Tho Minister of Mines and Labour (the Hon. G. J Anderson) will leave for the South Island on Monday evening, on departmental business.

A Press Association telegram from New Plymouth announces the death of Mr. Fred Bellringer, for many years superintendent of the fire brigade, and prominent in Alavonic circles. Mr. Cyrus E. Woods. United Sta+c Ambassador to Spain, has been nominated by President Harding to be Ambassador to Japan. Mr. Charles M. Claeys lias arrived from America, to take up the post of assistant managing director of tho Toxas Oil Co. of Australasia, at Wellington. Mr. George Robertson has received advice that Signor Carlo Antico, a former resident of this city, died at Penne, in Southern Italy, on January 20 last. The late Signor Antico owned considerable property in Newtown, and a street in Melrose has been named after him. Mr. Robertson at one time acted as Consular-Agent for Italy in Wellington.

Colonel John Mclnnes, who for six and a half years has been chief secretary to the Commissioner of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, left for Sydney yesterday bv the Ulimaroa in order to take up similar duties under the Commissioner for New South Wales and Queensland. Colonel Mclnnes was accorded a most hearty send-off hv tho local Army forces in tho Citadel on Wednesday evening. Commissioner and Mrs. BoothTucker, of the Salvation Army, left for Sydney yesterday, after „ a most enjoyable tour of the Dominion.

Prior to the sailing of the Corinthic yesterday, the tenants of Routh’s Buildings, Featherston Street, forgathered to wish bon voyage to their landlord. Mr. Frederick George Routh, wilio. 'after fifty years’ _ residence in Wellington, is visiting his native land. Mr. H. G. Didsbury, manager of the Standard Assurance Company, who acted as spokesman, presented Mr. Routh with a travelling rug. Mr. W. McLaughlin, of the New. Zealand Government Insurance Department, .has left Wellington for a hip Ao the Southern Lakes. Mr. Gordon Short arrived back at Wellington yesterday, after giving pianoforte recitals at Hastings, Palmerston North, and Wanganui.

Mr. A. G. Barnett, assistant-secre-tary to the Wellington Harbour Board, who has been spending a month on holiday at Rotorua, will return to Wellington to-day. Mr. O. A. Banner, chief agricultural instructor for the Wanganui Education Board, has been appointed headmaster of the Motueka. District High School. Mr. Banner is a graduate of Hawkesbury Agricultural College, New South Wales, where he acted as instructor for seven years, and was successful in directing the work in Wanganui for many years.

After 35 years’ service on the staff of the Wellington Terrace gaol, Mr. Henry Foreman retired on superannuation' on March 31. Last evening a number of his fellow workers and friends met in the Ponsonby Hall to wish Mr Foreman the best of happiness for the future. Dr. Gilmer made a presentation of a divan chair and a Kaiapoi rug on behalf of those present. Mr Foreman ioined tho staff of the gaol in 1887, and at tho time of his retirement occupied the position of chief warder.
