BLENDING OF THE WHITE AND RED CROSSES

Sir, —The reference in The Dominion this morning to the _ Geneva Convention and subsequent international Rea Cross Conferences, after the reversal in the colours of the Swiss flag was decided on as a symbol of merqx during war activities, recalls the opinion expressed bv some writers that the cross of the Order of St. John ot Jerusalem was probably incorporated in the national emblem. The origin of the Swiss Federal flag appears to indicates that Circa, 1339, the key to the defences of the city of Berne was attacked bv an army' under King Louis of Bavaria. Resistance was made by the Bernese and others, all armed, and carrying banners marked wtih a white cross!*- on a red ground. One of their aims was to free from death six hundred men besieged m iaupen Castle. Justinger. the says that ths reason for the. adoption ot the White Cross of St. John was that the Swiss considered that the freem” of the nation from their oppressors was to them as sacred a cause as the liberation of the Holy City and other places by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem—l am, etc.. g FIS HER. April 4.
