EAST AND WEST

THE FISHERMEN AT ISLAND BAY. Tho lino of demarcation between oast and west appears to bo clearly defined at Island Bay. judging .by questions asked at Mr. R. A. Wright’s meeting last night. It appears' that the fishermen recently sought permission to laud their dinghys on tho east side of the bay in rough weather, and that they asked for the erection of a slip on that side. Several speakers pointed out that tho Settlers’'Association wished the fishermen to be confined to the west side of tho bay. The site of the proposed slip was close to the ladies’ bathing shed. If tho permission asked for was granted tho speakers were agreed that .it would be the thin end of the wedge, and that the fishermen would gradually usurp tho east side of the bay a fl well as the west. Mr. Wright said tho fishermen asked to be allowed to use tho east sid<> if the bay only in tho event of rough weather, 'lliero were many fishermen, and they had to bo considered, as fish, mg was their means of livelihood- He thought that if a permanent custodial* wereYippointed for the beach, regulations could bo enforced.
