GAOL THE PENALTYThe theft of a box of chocolates, valued at 45., from the New Zealand Snipping Company’s liner Hurunui was denied in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday by a burly watei'sider, named Albert Jam?s King, for whom Me. A. J. Mazengarb appeared. Called by Sub-Inspector Cummings, S. E. Bryant, the second officer of the vessel, stated that he had observed tho accused and three other men eating chocolates in the No. 2 hold; from which cargo wa,s being discharged. Tho accused had the box in his hand, and later secreted it under a mat. A case of chocolates was in the hold where the man was working. The defence was a complete denial of the charge. The accused said he had neither eaten nor seen the chocolates. The Magistrate (Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.), declined to accept the accused s stow. “Ho knows perfectly well what happens if he steals,” said His Worship. “It is a pity we did not catch the others. Seven days haMl labour.
