An echo of the shipping trouble of last year occurred near the Gisborne wharf recently, two persons being concerned, a fireman on the steamer Tiroa and a waterside worker (states an ex-' charigje). The former was one of those hands taken on when free labour.was engaged to run the ships, and it is alleged that in the vicinity of the Tauranganui Hotel the waterside worker loudly described him as a “scab,” declaring that, he was taking bread mid butter from the seamen's families. A scuffle ensued, the fireman receiving an injury to his head' necessitating medical attention. Ho was able, however, to go home. The police were called in, and Constable Thompson took into ggatody the waterside worker. The Inttei appeared in the Magistrate s Cenrt and pleaded not guilty. The was adjourned. , , . A party of five cyclists, three being Levin residents and two visitors from Wellington, cycled through to Mangahao during tho week-end, leaving Levin at 7.30 a.m., and reaching the power-house at Shannon at 9 (relates the “Levin Chronicle ). Homo time, was spent, looking over the building, after which the climb to Arapeti, which had to be negotiated on foot owing to the grade, was commenced, occupying two hours for the five miles. Lunch was taken here, and Mangahao was reached at 1.30 p.m., tho party proceeding through the recently-pierced tunnel over a mile in length. Leaving Mangahao at 2.30 on the return journey, the party reached Lavin at 4.30 after a very strenuous though interesting day. The double trip is over 40 miles, and as far is known, this is the first time it has been done by cyclists.
