The information that some persons were bleeding kauri trees for gum on property owned by the Auckland City Council at Waitakere. but not on the watershed, was conveyed to the council last week by the waterworks engineer, who stated that this practice was resulting in dry rot rendering the trees useless either for commercial timber or scenic purposes. He suggested that a reward be offered to persons giving information which would lead to the ’conviction of offenders. Tho council decided to offer a i eward of £2O for such information and to erect notices to that effect on the connmi’s property on the watershed. The Mayor. Mr. J. H. Gunson, said that never had there been a period in his experience when there was so much deliberate and wanton destruction of trees about the. city. Ho suggested it might bo advisable to ask the teachers in schools to address the children on civic pride. He thought much of the damage done to shrubs and trees was due to carelessness, the result of an entire lack of training.
