STRUCK BY GALE

BARQUE DISMANTLED OFF AUSTRALIAN COAST

SALVED AFTER LONG STRUGGLE

BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION. . —Copyright. (Rec. April 5, 0.25 a.m. Melbourne, April 4. The barque Garthsnaid, laden with nitrates from Iquique, was struck by a south-west gale at noon on Good Friday, when off Capo Howe. During a heavy roll the topmast backstays broke, and a few minutes later tho main topmast crashed overboard. With the next roll a mainmast yard came down. Oil was poured on the waves, the falling wreckage having destroyed the lifeboats. At midnight the mainmast went over the side. The steamer Zealandio was sighted towards morning. She took the barque in tow, and after a three days’ struggle succeeded in saving her. The damage is estimated at £BOOO. As it is expected that the salvage bill will amount to £15,000, the vessel will probably be sold, to defray expenses.— Press Assn.
