ALLEGEDLY RESULT OF PERSONAL QUAEtREL
BY Telegraph.—Pp.kss association. —OpPYBIGHT. Constantinople, April 3. The body of Ali Chukri “Bey, the deputy for Trebizond, recently assassinated, was found near the house of Topal Osman Afa, a former loader of irregular bands, whom Kemal had rewarded with a colonelcy. Ali was apparently strangled,»and his body partially buried. A strong force of gendarmerie surrounded the home, where Tobal and his band had taken refuge. In a shai-p engagement ten of Topal’s followers were killed and he himself succumbed to wounds. The Premier informed the National Assembly that the murder of Ali was the result of a personal quarrel.—Reuter. . . m j [A message published on' Tuesday stated that Chukri Bey had been assassinated for political reasons and that the disclosure of the crime had badly shaken the Government.]
“TWO AWKWARD MEN REMOVED” (Rec. April 5, 0.5 a.m.) London, April 4. Tire “Daily Telegraph’s” Constantinople correspondent says:— Osman Afa for years organised massacres of Christians and robberies of Greek churches from which he is reputed to have amassed a fortune of half a million sterling. His body is to be hanged by the legs from a gibbet in ,-front df the National Assembly. So ends a career of crime and violence for the equal of which one must go back to the dark ages. Osman had recently been increasing his political power, and might soon have rivalled Chukri Boy as a critic of Ihe Government. Thus two awkward mon have been removed as the result of a nuroly personal quarrel. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
