Sir John Luke, M.P.. and Lady Luke. returned to Wellington last night from an extended visit to Auckland and tho njjfthern district.
Tho death is reported from Picton of Mr. Arthur P. Seymour, aged 81. at one time Superintendent of Marlborough Province. He was the oldest Justice of tho in MarlboroughHe represented Wairau in 1872 in the House of Representatives, and was for thirty-six years a member of the Marlborough Land Board. Sir John Roberts, K.C.M.G., of Dunedin, is a passenger for the United Kingdom by the Corinthic to-mor-row.
Among the passengers who arrived at Wellington yesterday by tho Tahiti from San Francisco, via ports, was Dr. W. H. Pettit, of Auckland. Mr. George Routh, the veteran printer of Wellington, who has been living in retirement in Newtown for some years, will leave by the Corinthic today with Mrs. Routh for a trip to tho Old Country. A very old identity of the Marlborough Sounds district. Mr. Peter Ewing, passed away at the Picton Hospital last Friday, at the age of S 3 years. The deceased was born at Ellensburg, Scotland, and came out to New Zealand at the age of twenty years with his brother, the late Mr. Robert Ewing, of Island Bay. He was one of the original prospectors at Gabriel’s Gully, Central Otago, and was engaged for a number of years in gold mining at Mount Arthur, iu tho Nelson district. Thence he proceeded to tho Sounds district, and. having resided successively at Jackson’s Head and Tory Channel, he finally settled down at Waikawa.
Mr. C. E. Daniel, of Masterton, who has been a member of the Wellington Harbour Board for 30 years past, does not intend to seek re-election at the coming poll. Mr. Maurice Cohen, of Palmerston North, a membelr of tne Wellington Harbour Board, returned from a trip to England and the Continent yesterday.
Mr. J. Nicol, M.A., of Wanganui, has been appointed senior mathematical master on the residence staff of Scots College, Wellington. Mr. Kan Hing, a cadet Chinese Consul, arrived to take up his duties in Wellington by tho s.s. Ulimaroa yesterday. Dlr. Hing, who hails from Peking, was stationed for some time at Shanghai, and later at HongKong.
