WATERSIDE WORKERS’ AWARD
COURT’S INTERPRETATIONS. z _ * The Arbitration Court’s interpretaztions of the Dominion waterside workers’ award, asked for by the National Disputes Committee, are as follow: — Special Cargo.—The addition of the words “in one hold and below hatches” indicates that the extra payment prescribed is intended to apply to the men handling kerosene, etc., below hatches. Unless circumstances make the work dirty and unpleasant, dirt money is not payable to men not employed in the ship’s hold. / Meal Hour Pay.—“ Double ordinary rates,” as contended by the union, means double the ordinary time rates for the particular classes of work being performed. Gisborne Cases. —(1) The minimum rate under clause 15 covers the travelling time. (2) Men working in the hold of a lighter with shovels or forks are entitled to the special rate,, but not men solely engaged in tipping; this opinion is tentative and only applies to the case presented, but it is desirable that the parties should agree on a definition of “digging in.” (3) Men working from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. were not entitled to pay till 5 p.m., but could have been ordered to stand by wifhouff pay, instead of being sent home. (4) Men working from midnight ta 7 a.m. were only entitled to double pay for four hours and ordinary pay thereafter. (5) “Day” means a calendar day; men who work till G. 30 a.m. and resume at 1 p.m. are not entitled to pay for the intervening time.
