A. London cablegram announces the death of Sir James Dewar,' F.R.S., who was perhaps best known for his discoveries in regard to liquid air and tho invention of silvered ■ vacuum vessels, known as Dewar flasks, or more popularly Thermos flasks. He was also the co-inventer with Sir Frederick Abel of cordite, a smokeless powder. He was born at Kincardine-on-Fortli, in 1842, and was educated at Dollar Academy and Edinburgh University. He has filled many positions on scientific bodies, the most notable being on the British Government’s Explosives Committee during the war period. He held 'several professional appointments in chemistry at British Universities, and received a large number of gold medals as the result of his scientific investigations.
