POLICE CASES

The police cases in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday were heard by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.

Two youthful farm hands. Roy, Tunniclifl'o and a boy under 16, stepped cautiously into the dock to answer a charge of stealing harness, a stockwhip, and other articles,’to the total value of £l3 18s. 6d., the property of Reginald ’Welsby. “It was more in the nature of a boy’s prank than anything else,” stated Chief-Detective Kemp in applying for a remand until Wednesday next. “The youngsters were working for tho complainant, and. they made away with a horse each and the gdar. It has all since been recovered. One of the boys declares that he purchased the horse, so I ask that the matter be held over for a week.” Th® remand was granted. Charged with being an idle, and disorderly person, a slightly-built youth named Tutre Joseph Collins was- remanded for a week.

William Murphy, alias Tyler, a third offender for insobriety, was fined £2 for a fourth lapse, and given the option of spending seven days in gaol. “I don’t know what word I. used last night,” said a young Tongan steward, Benjamin Tukuofu, when charged with using obscene language. A fine of £l, in default throe days’ imprisonment, was imposed. CIVIL BUSINESS.

Cook, £4 155., costs 9s. On judgment summonses, Peter Campbell was ordered to pay George Ivan £26 19s. by instalments of ss. per'week; L. B. Wilson to pay B. McDuff £9 Hs. 6d. before April 12, in. default six days’ imprisonment; D. Campbell to pay J. Mcllraith and Co. £ll 14s. Bd. before April 12, in default seven days’ imprisonment; J. Holden to pay Brownlee, Ltd.. £l5 10s. 7d. before April 12, in default seven days’ imprisonment. BY-LAW BREACHES.

Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., heard the by-law cases on Tuesday afternoon ■ For leaving motor-cars unattended, John Swinson was fined £1 and costs, and Keith Hann ay Ids. and costs. Morgan Duncan, who drove a motorcycle on the Hutt cycle track, was fined £2 and costs. Driving a motor-car without a permit cost James Thompson 10s. and costs. For failing to provide motor-cars with lights, George Haines was fined £1 and. costs, and Max Edward KTillbrook and Douglas James Irvine were each fined 10s. and costs. Arthur Edmund Preston, for exceeding the speed limit on a motor-cycle, was fined 10s. and costs. A fine of £1 -was imposed on A. D. McDuff, who had commenced building operations without a permit. • For omitting to comply with a notice concerning his water service, Oliver Mewhinney was fined £1 and costs, and William Ryam who failed to keep a tap in good repair, was fined 10s. For permitting stock to wander, William Hedges and Eric Roy Pratt were each fined £2, and James Fowler was fined 10s. DEFENCE DEFAULTERS. Failure to attend drill led to the imposition of the following fines : —George Arthur Hawthorn, Robert William King, Albert Edward Peterson, and Leslie .Justin Wood, each £3; Vincent Patrick Devine, £l. Philip Octavis Sutton, who had not notified his change of address, was fined £2.
