PILFERAGE- CLAIMS
AUSTRALIA AND NEW ' ZEALAND
An interesting comparison has been inade between the claims made against shipowners, in respect to pilferage at New Zealand and Australian ports recently, compared with the figures a year or .two ago, when pilferage was at its heignt. The figures relate to steamers owned by a line running from New York io Australia and New Zealand, arid represent neatly the whole of the sailings of that hue on that route. , There is a satisfactory state of affairs generally at Australian ports; though it 'is suggested that there is room for further improvement at Sydney. A scheme, which has already been in operation in Melbourne, has been .instituted ,by tho Premier of Now South Wales, to provide a police patrol for'the wharves, the expense being borne proportionately by the Harbour Trust, the Police Department, and the overseas and coastal companies. With the exception of Is. per day per man, paid by the Harbour Board the cost of policing the wharves in Wellington is borne by the Police Department. In tho following, table the first column indicates the average amount .- of the claims per,ton of cargo carried for the period from October. 1920, to December, 192 J ; the second from January to April, 1922; qnd the third the amount in respect of recent' trips from New York to the ports named: — r
