THE MAYORALTY
SUBMISSION TO TRIBUNAL CONDITIONAL OFFER BY MR. WRIGHT A good deal more has been going on in respect to the Mayoralty than has been evident on tho surface. It has already been reported that two conferences of the Mayoral candidates (with .the exception of Mr. Peter Fraser) have been held with a meeting of responsible business men connected with no particular league or organisation, and that great efforts have been made to induce Messrs. R. A. Wright, G. Mitchell, and L. McKenzie to agree to the choice of a candidate by the tribunal. Mr. Mitchell fell in with the idea at the first conference, but Messrs. Wright and McKenzie preferred not to commit themselves, as they argued that it was as much a matter for their committees as themselves. . At the second conference Air. vt right was represented by two of his committeemen, who stated that they /had decided not to allow their candidate to stand down, and wished to give reasons, a course which was not permitted. Mr. McKenzie attended personally, and flatly refused to allow any committee or tribunal to say whether !ie_ should or should not stand. .Ho hart stood' down before, and had given twelve years’ good service to the City Council. Since then, however, Mr. Wright has agreed to submit his name to the tribunal mentioned, provided that Mr. McKenzie agrees to do likewise; but as "the latter persists in his intention to go to the poll against all-comers, there isi still a deadlock on the main point—the reduction of the number of candidates.
