PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. ’ The fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last night when there were present:—The Mayor (Mr. J. \V. McEwan), a*.d Councillors C. P. Brocklebank, A. Poro. R. H. Jones, A. Anderson. G. Cook, B. H. Hartley, and W. Hay. The Commissioner of Crown Lands reported that steps were being' taken to close the eastern end of High Street, and to convey a piece of land there to the council in exchange for the land the council was asked to give up for the purposes of Patrick Street. The Valuer-General agreed to make a .'reduction of £6 in the valuation charges. In considering the petition of 35 residents in the .vicinity of Cuba Street, asking that the footpath on the western side be asphalted before the coming winter, councillors were agreed on th© point that it was too near the winter for such a work to bo undertaken, but that it would be attended to next summer.
TEe committee set up to consider the question of the amalgamation of the Petone and Hutt boroughs will meet the committee of the Hutt borThursday, April 5. The condition of Moran’s Creek, which contains an accumulation of tar from the gasworks,' was tho subject of complaint ly Mr. Peter Sharp, who stated that his cowh were suffering ill effects from drinking the water in the creek. Failing the council taking steps to remedy the matter Mr. Sharpe said he intended testing the case at law. The council decided to refer th© matter to the Gas and Lighting Board, •
