FARMERS’ APPEAL

STATE AID FOR AGRICULTURE MR. BONAR LAW’S VIEW By Telegraph.—Press Association. —Copyright. 6 London, March 19. An official report has been issued of speeches made when a Farmers’ Union deputation waited upon the Prime Minister, Mr. Bonar Law, seeking State aid for agriculture.

Mr. Robbins, for the farmers, said: “If both subsidies and protection are refused, the Government in justice ought to repeal the Safeguarding of Industries Act and cease subsidising the Dominions’ agriculture through the Empire Settlement Act. The inevitable consequence of refusing help will be reduced food production and further rural depopulation.” Air. Bonar Law acknowledged that the position of agriculture was serious. Subsidies had been tried in war time and found 'impracticable. The only logical remedy was protection, and the public was not ready for that. A majority could not be found to support it either in Parliament or the coun/try. 'The Credit Facilities Bill which was being prepared by the Government, he hoped, would help as regarded rating.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
