PICNIC AT UPPER HUTT

The employees of the Hansford and Mills Construction Company, r Ltd.. spent a most enjoyable day at Maidstone Park/ Upper Hutt, onjSaturday, the occasion being the annual picnic of tho company. About .200- of the employees, with their wives and families, journeyed out by train. A lengthy programme of sports was got through successfully. The children were especially catered for with races, etc., and in addition each child received a bag of sweets, a bag of fruit, and a toy. The star item-of the dav was tho directors’ dash handicap, which resulted in a dead heat between Messrs. Mills and Hansford, after a very exciting contest. After the programme had been gone through and tea over several speeches were made thanking the directors for their generosity in giving the employees, such an enjoyable outing. Mr. Hansford' responded on behalf of the company. The principle events of the day resulted as under: — Directors’ dash handicap; Messrs. Mills and Hansford, dead heat.

Foremen’s flutter: Weatherspoon,] Rowe, 2. Old men’s race: Simeon, 1; Griffiths, 2.

Relay race: Steel yard. 1; match factory, 2. Combined grand hand’eap: Fullfm-d (head office), 1 : Averv (steel yard). Sutherland (steel yard), 2. Married ladies: Mrs. Phillips, 1; Mrs. Wylder, 2. Single ladies: Miss Innis. 1; Miss Philips, 2, Committee race: Rowe, 1; Foster, 9

Tug-of-war: Final pull between labourers and steel, yard, labourers wor by 1 inch.
