HIS DANGEROUS DAY

AN IRISHMAN WHO FELL Having successfully evaded the con vivial celebration of St. Patrick’s Day for the past six years, a little, old man named Samuel McShane succumbed re temptation on Saturday afternoon, and what happened as the result of his lapse was narrated + o Mr F. K. Hrmt. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. McShane was called upon to explain why he had stolen a case of whisky, valued at £5 Bs., and described as the property of James Lewin.

Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty. According to Senior-Sergeant Lander, McShane had satisfied tho thirst that had been in abeyance. Thon, entering the bottle store of the Metropolitan Hotel, he had gone behind the counter and purloined the case of whisky. The licensee observed the act, and the accused had not carried the booty far before he was apprehended. Mr. Treadwell deprecated the suggestion that the man had been actuated by any criminal intent. “Ho is an Irishman.” added counsel, “and it was St. Patrick’s Day ”

His Worship: We won’t have theft on St. Patrick’s Day or any other day. Mr. Treadwell: Ho had not had a drink on St. Patrick’s Day* 1 for six years, and he was very much elated with the day and with the whisky. It was an evil day; he had resisted it on six previous occasions.

The Magistrate took a lenient view and fined tho accused £2 and costs.
