The South African Government suffeied a defeat m a by-election at Oudtshoorn, which was captured by the Nationalists by a substantial majority. Mr. H. S. W. Lawson, the Premier of Victoria, and Airs. La-wson have left Paris for tho Riviera and Italy. During their stay in Paris they met Mr. Clarke, the Victorian Alinister of Public Works, who entertained Air. and Mrs. Lawson and Aladame Ale'ba at luncheon. Captain Ormsby-Gore, Cplonial Unde r-Secretary, replying to a question in tlio House of Commons, said that the issue of licenses to Crown Colonies fur the erection of wireless stations capable of direct communication with Butain would be ultimately under tho British Government’s authority. The issue of similar licenses to the Dominions would be under conditions laid down by the lespectivc Dominions’ Governments.
At Spencer (Tennessee) a farm owned by the family of tho State Secretary, Mr. Hasten, was tho scene of wholesale shooting by a negro convict, who was on parole, and who called Mr. Hasten’s brother to tho door and wounded hirn. The negro then fired at several persons who were rushing to the scene, fatally wounding tho Secretary’s mother and severeh’ injuring three neighhours. Air. Heston's sister-in-law dropped dead with fright. Tho negro escaped but is being pursued by a posse.
