WHITE ISLAND ACTIVE

White Island was exceedingly active on Saturday week, and a party of Whakata-ne residents took advantage of an opportunity to visit the island on Sunday, says an exchange. They were well rewarded by the visit, for the island was in a particularly angry mood. Groat jets of steam shot upwards throughout tho day to a considerable height. The activity was most marked in the new which was recently discovered. While there is great activity in the older vent, it is apparent that most of the vapour escapes through the new opening. Tho tremendous activity' going on can be gauged by the fact that members of the party near the blowholes could not make themselves heard owing to the terrible roar of the mighty forees underneath. Photograplis were taken of the blow-holes, and the party returned to Wliakatane after some six hours on tips weird outpost of subterranean forces.
