NOTES AND COMMENTS

BY GLENCOE. THE TRENTHAAI MEETING. Those who braved tho elements and journeyed to Trantham yesterday, must have been disappointed with the final gallops, for fully half the contestants for Saturday’s races had not put in an appearance. Too much reliance should not bo placed on tho gallops, as. there wore no trestles out, and several of the riders cut tho corners. It rained heavily all night, but cleared at 4 a.m., and when work commenced an hour later on the trial grass the going was in good order. C. Pritcbnrd was tho first to commence, and he sent Bayana with Wink over half a mile. The pair got to the end of tho distance in 52 3-osoc. Rod Courier, by himself, improved on this time.

Insurrection (A. Rood) had Palestrina (P. Keene) well beaten at the end of ten furlongs, which took 2min.

13 2-ssec. Tho first two furlongs took 27sec., and tho last mile Imin. 46 3-ssec. Palestrina had a few pounds tho worst of the weights. Epitaph ran into a trestle, at Ngatarawa, and has done nothing since tho Ellerslie meeting. Ridden by R. Reed, sho got to the end of half a milo in 51sec.

Zouave covered six furlongs in Imin, 19 2-sse«. '

Rapine (R. Reqcl) had to be held back to Bonnio Heather over tho jirst part of a mile, which took Imin. 45sec. Rapino had to finish alone, as tho saddle on Bonnie Heather slipped back. Pantagruel beat Suggestion over three furlongs in 41 sec. YVinning Hit was too good for his stable mate Angelo over six furlongs. The time was Imin. 20sec. Printemps, who leaves for Foxton to-day, was too good for Sponte over a five furlongs brush. Alfort, ridden by his trainer, James Buchanan, always had tho upper hand of Muraahi over six furlongs, which took Imin. 19sec. J. H. Prosser sent Parorangi and Blackhead oyer five 7 furlongs. The time was Imin. Bsec. The Emperor surprised tlio trridk watchers by running half a mile alone

in 51sec. Cupidon did a solid round, the last six furlongs taking Imin. '2osec. Astinome and Derouledo were associated over half a mile, which was loft behind in 52sec. Tho latter went well. ,

Tho two-year-old 'Sol tana beat Wheatfield over half a mile in 52sec. Dainty Step was too good for Triboulet over seven furlongs. The latter is now trained by _-T. H. Prosser. Vespucci ran a mile by himself. He does not look tuned up. Scion ran once round. Tho last mile took Imin. 48sec., and he. had the assistance of Kaika over the last seven furlongs. Pluto and a companion ran six furlongs in Imin. 19sec. Tressayr and Valdamo took on a half-mile bout. The former was first past the post in 52sec. Ho looks very well.

After breakfast, Silver Peak, Mantua, and Kerb ran six furlongs. The first-named was going easily at the finish. The last half-mile took 52sec. Roseclay trotted .a circuit, and then ran a mile in Imin. 54sec. He was afterwards given another canter round tho track. R. AV. King, with Red Gown and Pilliewinkio, F. Davis with Lucius, Queen March, and Orofino, T. Lloyd with Sunnrt and Cleasanta,. J. Coyle with Aeriform, .T. S. Jamieson with L’Amour and Pillage, R. Knox with Sir Rosebery, and J. Gravestock with Chimera and Penous reached Treniham yesterday.

There is no doubt that Kilbroney has already proved himself as a sire of stayers, and in addition to Insurrection he has sired two Derby winners in Kilboy (A.J.C. Derby) and Killiocrankie (W.A. Derby). On this account there is sure to be keen demand for his progeny when they go into the ring next Tuesday. In all. nine lots aro to be sold, and with one exception they claim Kilbroney ns their sire. Tho colts from Afterglow. BebeRibblo, and Puttee are very fine types of yearlings, and any one of them may bo expected to tip the sale. in tact, they are such an even lot that few people venture a prediction as to which will bring tho biggest price. The biggest of them is the Puttee colt. Hi? dam was a nearly full-sister to Bass Rock, a good winner in England as a two-vear-old. Cupidon’s half-brother is biggpr than the Derby winner was at tho same age. Ho is all qualitv, and there will bo plenty of buyers for him. The Afterglow colt is a perfect model that it is difficult to fault. Ho is not so big as tho others, but ho looks a galloper all over, and is sure to come early. Entries for tho C.J.C. summer meeting close at 8 o’clock to-iimbt. At the Foxton Racing Chib’s diamond jubilee mooting on Saturday, in tho birdcage, immediately after the race for tho Diamond Jubilee _ Cup (1883-1923). tho owner of tho winning horse will I>q presented with the very handsome cup, valued at. forty-five guineas, donated by tho Mnnawatu racecourse trustees. Tho trainer of tho winner will rqcoive a. pair of racing binoculars, donated by tho executive of the Manawatu Licensed Victuallers’

Association, and to tho jockey will be given a gold-mounted whip by Mrs. Walter Kirkland, Whyte’s Hotel, Foxton.

_ On tho second day at Foxton, tho rider of the winning horse in the President’s Handicap will receive a jockey’s whip presented by Air. IT. D. Mclver (at one time owner of Foeman and First Limj), and tho rider of tho winner of the Apprentices’ Hack Handicap will receive from Air. C. Price (a rider of many winners on tho course) a similar trophy.
