THE AMOKURA

TURNED INTO COAL HULK. It was announced yesterday that the hull of the one-time Government training ship Amokura hud been sold to the Westport Coal Company for conyersion to a coal hulk at V ellington. Amokura was bought from, the New Zealand Government early in September of last year by Alessrs. Jory and McAVhannel, engineers, of Wellington, who have since been engaged m removing the boilers and machinery and dismantling the fittings. 'The Amokura was launched nt Greenock, Scotland, in 1889, as the first-class gunboat Sparrow, with a displacement of 805 tons. She was bought by the New Zealand Defence Department in 1906, and handed over to tte Alarine Department in Alarch, 1907, for use as training ship for boys The vessel served that purpose -until 1919, when she was laid up in Wellington, the boys, however, continuing their training up to Christmas, 1921. Captain Hooper was in command of the Amokura from 1907. to 1920, when ho was appointed Nautical Adviser at Wellington
