THORNDON RECLAMATION
MINISTER CONGRATULATED “General satisfaction will be felt throughout the city at the news contained in yesterday morning’s paper, that tho sea wall at Thorndon is to be proceeded with at once,” stated a report presented to the Central Progress League by tho secretary (Mr. G. Mitchell) last evening. “This wall is the foundation for a new railway station and yard, better outlets to tho country east and west, and better suburban service. We must now concentrate on these works, which are the natural sequence of tho reclamation work. The most urgent of these works is .the duplication to Tawa Flat, necessitating a now tunnel entering somenjiere about Kaiwarra. It would be approximately two miles and a quarter in length. As there will be a very largo quantity of metal required for concrete for the retaining: wall, and also for reclamation, would it not be bettor to mine the metal from the tunnel at Kaiwarra? This would be an economic and businesslike ment, would serve two purposes, nnd save a large expenditure of money.” The chairman (Mr. P. C. Watt) remarked that the Progress Leatrue was
fullv justified in taking credit for pushing tho work io a final issue. The report was adopted, and it was decided to forward a letter to the Minister congratulating him on the start made, and expressing a hone for the speedy conclusion of the undertaking.
