TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR AT PICTON RAILWAY SMITHY ENGULFED LOSS OF CROPS IN NORTH CANTERBURY BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION". Blenheim, January 15. Heavy rain was experienced at Blenheim and throughout the district last nio-ht. It was of an extraordinary character at Picton, and considerable damage is reported in and around the °Tho sudden flooding of the AVaitohi undermined the bank near tho railway workshops, and a portion of the smithy was engulfed. The stream is bank hi<*h this morning. A small slip on the railway lino at- Elevation was quickly cleared, and the washout near Mount Pleasant did not interfere with traffic. „ , . . lioad traffic between Blenheim and Picton is blocked, as the road is under water. r Christchurch, January 15. The heavy rain in North Canterbury may do great damage to standing npe crops and will delay the thrashing about Racecourse Hill, AVaddington. and Sheffield. The rainfall was very heavy and the creeks are in flood.
