ATTACK ON ALLIED SOVEREIGNTY TROOPS AND WARSHIPS DISPATCHED SEQUEL TO GERMANISATION POLICY The movement against Memel is regarded as an attack on Allied and the Ambassadors’ Conferferonce has decided to make representations at Kovno to ensure that the Lithuanian Government shall arrest it. The Ambassadors’ Conference has decided to make representations at Kovno to ensure that the Lithuanian Government shall arrest the movement against Memel, which is regarded as an attack on Allied sovereignty. It was also decided to send a French colonel to command the Allied troops at Memel, to which British and French warships are proceeding. The Lithuanian Government has officially declared that tho movement is a local rising, the natural sequel to the policy of Germanisation in defiance °f the wishes of the inhabitants, pursued by tho so-called “directorium, which the Germans established when they controlled the territory, and which since has not been modified. —Reuter.

LITHUANIANS’ ADVANCE London, January 14. “Tho Times’s” Berlin correspondent says that the Lithuanians are advancing in a style which suggests that they are led by military experts. They are rapidly occupying Memel territory. The town is encircled and the suburbs occupied.—“ The Times.” WHOLE DISTRICT SURRENDERS GERMAN DIRECTORIUM CAUSE OF RISING (Rec. January 15, 7.25 p.m.) London, January 14. Advices received in Loudon state that the leader of the insurgent movement, in a parlementaire to the French Commissioner at Memel, informs him that the whole district surrendered without bloodshed, that the hostility was aimed not at the French or the Allies, but at the German directorium, from which the non-German members had recently withdrawn. —Aus.-N.Z.
