YOUNG SEAMAN BEFORE THE COURT.
A heffty youth named John O’Brien described jib a seainan, was called upon in the’Magistratc’s Court on Saturday morning to explain why ho had been found, bj’ night on premises at 227 Cuba Street. In applying for a remand until Friday next, Senior-Sergeant Lander said that a constable had located the accused in tho back yard of the place, which was owned I>y Mr. Carey, at. 11.30 p.m. on Friday. “He had to scale a 4ft. paling fence to gain access,” added the senior-sergeant, “and ns his home is not far away, it does not look as though he were there for any good purpose. He was found to bo in possession of a pair of pliers, which may or may not- have been carried for a lawful purpose.” Mr. A l .. B- Sicvwright, who represented the accused, suggested that the trouble jnay hnve been due to the inct iTat the .youth had been out of work' since the' seamen’s strike. Counsel askc<Lthat accused be admitted to bail in his own recognisances. Mr. E. Page. S.M., granted the remand. fixing hail at £25. on condition that accused reports to the police daily.
