TROTTING

WELLINGTON CLUB’S MEETING

GOLD CUP TO TARAIRE Despite the rough weather, tho M ellington Trotting Club had a most successful meeting on Saturday, and the exixsruuent of altering the date was proved correct. There was a very good attendance, and some good s;x>rt was seen. The machine accommodation proved all too small, especially on the outside, and although the turnover showed an increase a» lot of money was shut out oh each raco. After 4110 Gold Cup was run Air. 1. M. M ilford, M.P., presented the trophy to Mr. K. M Morton, owner of Tariare, and the latter and the driver, James Bryce, responded. The starting of Mr. H. Reynolds was the best ever seen on the Hutt Park, and the official got the fields away well to time. Secretary R. AV. Short had the arrangements m smooth working order, and Stijjendiary 'J' H. Davey had an easy afternoon. Dustin’s Ltd.’supplied the luncheon.. The. totalisator handled £21,656 10s., an increase of £llOO over the figures ot last year. Change was the only defection tor the Hutt Park Trial Handicap, leaving nine runners. It was a good betting race, Guiding Star being better fancied than Doris Dillon, Miss Bahs, and Abundance. Doris Dillon was first to show out, and led down the back from Alias Babs. Guiding Star, and Percy Dillon, with Cute Lad at the head of the others. With a round to go, Doris Dillon was beaten, leaving Miss Babs and Guiding Star to go on from Percy Dillon, Cute Lad being lust behind" them. Four furlongs from home Guiding Star commenced to tire, and Cute Lad ran through into second place. Rounding the top turn he got on terras with Miss Babs, and having her measure in the run home he won by four lengths, with Guiding Star three k'ngths further awav third; then came Percy Dillon. Palm Dillon faded to commence correctly, and Reta Elect broke before going half a mile. Abundance began nicely', and did everything right, but she was never near the leaders. The winner was sore wnen ho went out, but warmed up during the preliminary. He is a good type of six-year-old pacer by Brown. Pearl (Jewel Chimes—Cast Pearl) from Cute, who did her early racing under the late Mr. Edwards. Cute Lad was bred by Mr. J. D. Piper at Pahiatua, from whom he was purchased by his owner-trainer, Air. H. Jones. Pearl Coronado was sent out third favourite for the Borough Handicap, and beginning more smartly than usual she was in front with a 'round to go, and won very casilv. Her success was made casv by thq first favourite. Fireman, breaking at the start. Had he gone away properly he would have troubled the winner. Daisy Dillon also stood on the mark, and another’wellfancied candidate in Lady Logan gave a poor exhibition. Not that she did anything wrong, but simply showed no pace. Steel TVire was first away, ana led out of thq straight from,- Kaikai, with Pearl Coronado already in third place. Going along tho back Kaikai went to pieces. Steel Wire cried enough, and then Daisy Dillon ran down her opponents. But her effort was short-lived, for with six furlongs to go she was flying signals of distress. At this , stage Pearl Coronado took charge, and .never left the* issue in doubt. She is owned by Mr. L. Cloako, and is by Van Coronado from Cast Pearl. She is trained by S. A. August, who rode her. Of the eight acceptors, Ngahere was the only scratching. Ten unhoppled trotters lined up to contest the President’s Handicap Nat Patch and Lady Esma being the late scratchings. Nelson Bell was a pronounced favourite, but spoilt his chance by breaking badly on two occasions. Peter Dean should have won. He broke badly at three different stages of the contest, and then was up with tho winner as they straightened for home. Kalman, Meritorious, and Glace Grattan broke up at the start, and only had a spectator’s interest in ' the race. Fairbum was quickest to find his feet, and led for a mile and a half from Nelson Bell and Peter Dean. Then Pete Peter came along, and, taking charge three furlongs from home, he stayed there to win by four lengths. Ho is a good type of trotter by Petereta from a mare by Specification. He is owned by Air. L. Birkett, of Nelson, who will have to strike ill-luck not to attain prominence on fiietropolitan courses with the gelding. ’V hite Lunin had everv chance, but was in trouble before half the iourney was covered. , Tho New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup was won by Mr. R; . AL Alorton’s roan gelding Taraire. He lost a little at the start, but before a mile, and a quarter was covered he was in front, and though tested by Pitaroa all through the concluding lap, he drew out in the straight tn win handsomelv bv four lengths. Tho eleven carded faced the starter, Bryce’s pair being backed down to less than oven money. Of the others, Latonannd Pitaroa were the only ones seriously supported. Havsoed,. Sympathy, and Peter Mac nut themselves out of court by refusing to begin properly. ' After Brownwood had led for three furlongs,, he was replaced bv Progress, who strocle awav in front from a bunch consisting of Brownwood, Taraire, Latona., Pitaroa. Rorke’s Drift. Ahuriri,- and Dolly Dillon. There was no change till six furlongs from home" where Progress and Brownwood dropped back beaten, and Ahuriri was pulled up. At this stage Taraire and Pitaroa went right away from the field, Taraire eventually beating his rival po’ntless. Latona. finished best of the others, and though fu’.'lv a dozen lengths behind Pitaroa it was good enough to secure third money. Rorke’s Drift and Dolly Dillon were the next to finish. Taraire' is by lour C himes from Murieata, and is. trained by J. Brvcc, who drove him. Change was sent out favourite for the AVellington Handicap. After begaining slowly, ho went badly, breaking several times on the journey. Notwithstanding lie took charge four furlongs from homo, but when tackled m the straight by AV a i tare re he broke again, thus enabling AA'aitarere to beat h:m by nearly three lengths. The winner is a good sort of a <mare by Hal Zolpck from AVnterfall, and is owned bv Mr. T. E. Thomson, of Taeknkariki. She took charge soon rfter the startj and led for a mile and a half, where Change ran past her. I he pair were followed all the. way by Mis» Bubs and Blair Audubon,, hut neither 'of tho latter pair had any chance with Change or AVaitare.re. Jimmv Chimes began slowly, and Doris Dillon was honelesslv beaten with r* r/itind to go Zolock Palm ran a good race, and should soon bo seen to advantage. Hie

winner is trained by AV. AVilletts, who drove her. /After meeting with a mishap while being led to the course and being obviously sore in his preliminary, Locandn Jack won tho Stewards’ Handicap by three lengths from Afacushla, who made all tho early running, and. was beaten on her merits. Fireman and the bracketed pair Kingsmoor and Lady Logan carried most of tho money. Kaikai ran badly, and Kingsmoor and Fireman stood on the mark. Lady was prominent for six furlongs anil then tired badly. The winner is owned by Mr. A. R. Farrell, and is tmined bv J. AfcDermott. Locaiida Jack was ridden by E. AfcDermott. and was very lame on returning to scale. He is by Brent Locanda from Alice Aland, and when recovered from his troubles will be seen to advantage in good sprint events. The Petone Handicap was a poor contest. Lynx. AVhite Lunin, Kelman carried most money. Kabestone, B’ack Palm and Kalman broke up at the start. After Afny Rota had led for five furlongs. Aleritorious took charge and won by a hundred yards from Grace Grattan, who just beat Kehnan for Second money. Lynx broke up soon after the start and was Inme on returning to scale. Meritorious is owned by Air. J. R. Corrigan, and is bv Albertorious from Afersey. She is trained by AA r . Hooper, and was ridden by E. AfcDermott. Kelmau was disqualified for galloping past the post, and his rider, D. AA’ithers, was severely censured for not endeavouring to pull his horse back to ; ts right gait. . . AVith the exception of Taraire, all startedTn -the Electric Handicap, for which Ahuriri, Tauhinu, and Pitaroa were the popular fancies. Ahuriri broke at the start and lost sixty yards. Tanhinu also tangled. . Progress was in front at the end of a furlong, but on reaching the stand Tauhinu took charge and led out of the straight from Pitaroa, Brownwood and Dolly Dillon. Going along the back. Ahuriri gathered the opposition, and three furlongs from home ho got on terms with the leader. Pitaroa was first in lino for home, and though tackled by Ahuriri, the pair fought out a dmgding finish, Pitaroa beating Ahuriri by a head. AVait:popo was third, and Dolly Dillon fourth. Pitaroa is owned by Mr. J. ShatT, who drove him. He is by Petereta from Aotca Roa. Had Ahuriri left the mark, he would have won.
