Messrs. E. J. Rolleston, T. D. Burnett, and J. Kitchener, Al.P.’s, telegraphs our Christchurch correspondent, left by last night’s ferry steamer for Wellington. Tho Rev. Dr. Gibb, of St. John’s Presbyterian Church, who is touring the North Island by motor, is at present on a brief visit to Gisborne as' the guest of tho Rev. J. Aitken. Mr. 11. D. Caplen, solicitor, of Hawera, has been admitted as notary public. Mr. Cecil Mason, assistant general manager for Australasia of ISe'.znick Pictures (Australia), Ltd.), arrived by Ilia Ulimaroa yesterday, and will make a short tour of New Zealand. It is announced that Air W. A. Bowring, the well-known New Zealand portrait painter, left London, by the Athenic on December 29, cn route lor te-e Dominion. Mr. E. Berneau, the ex-Wanganui cricket player, who has been a member of the Wellington Club this season, left Wellington yesterday for Hawke's Bay, where he lias accepted a business position. Mr. Berneau's performances in local cricket this season gained for liim a place in the Wellington representative team which defeated Auckland, and represented the Now Zealand Eleven in the second Test with the M.C.C. team.

Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Munniugs, who are leaving Wellington to-morrow to take up a permanent residence, in Sydney, were farewelled by a largo gathering of friends at the Empire Hotel on Tuesday afternoon. Represent fives were present from the Wellington district branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, tho Master Builders’ Association, and the Academy of Fine Arts. Air. W. M. Pvze, acting-president of the institute.’said that the departing guest, who was a. man of high ideals and literally a builder of cities, would be a, great acquisition to Sydney As a member of the institute he had been a tower of strength in art executive capacity, and had done invaluable work in raising tho standard of examination. Mr. and Aire. Mannings carried with them the best wishes for their future happiness and prosperity. Mrl Munnings feelingly responded.

Deep regret was felt in local Rugby football and bowling circles yesterday when the news was received of the death at his residence, Blythe Street, Berhampore, of Mr. J. N. Anstill. Tho deceased was one of the earliest members of the Toneice football Club and Newtown Bowling Club, and bis lengthy association brought him into intimate contact with many . fo'lowers of sport, by all of whom he was held in the highest regard. . For some 46 vears the late Mr. Anstill was in the employment of the- A.M.P. Society, and latterly held the position of head clerk. He was 61 years of age, and a native of Wellington. Deceased is survived by a widow and two daughters.

Lieut.-Colonel James Y. Foster, of the well-known firm of Messrs. Joseph roster and Sons, printing machinery manufacturers,.of Preston and London, is at present visiting Wellington on a second holiday tour to the Dominion within three years. Ho has been an interested spectator of the recent Test matches between the M.C.C. team and New Zealand. Lieut.-Colonel Foster, who is accompanied by his daughter. Miss Foster, considers New Zealand an ideal country for Europeans to winter in.

At tho monthly meeting of the Now Zealand Trotting Association last night (states a Press Association message from Christchurch), Air. Hopkins took the opportunity,'on hehalf of the board, to congratulate Mr. P. Selig, the chairman, on his jubilee in journalism. Messrs. Kitcliinghnrn, Mark, and Denton also made complimentary references to Air. Selig’s work in journalism. and also to his long connection with the New- Zealand Trotting Association. In replying. Mr. Selig said ho rweatlv appreciated the references which had' been made to his work both in sport and journalism, and he sincerely thanked tho board. Dunsterville" who was for elevon vears on the literary staff of “The Press,’’ has been appointed editor, of the New Zealand Farmer,” Auckland. During the past twelve months, Mr. Duusterville has been acting as the couth Island representative of that journal, with his headquarters in Christchurch.
