BLACKBALL MINE FIRE
" ▼ y SUBDUED BY THE MINERS BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION. Craymouth, November 25. The fire at the Blackball mine was discovered at 6.30 p.m. in No. 4^heading, just, off the main rope road. A hundred men, composing the back shift, working in the mine, were all withdrawn safely. There was a rush -to assist by the miners, and a bucket brigade was formed, Mr.. W. Balderstone, secretary of the Miners’ Union, being prominent. His boots were buiwil off during his efforts to subdue the fire. A pump was put into operation, and two leads of hose poured 250 gallons of water per minute on the fire, which, by 2 a.m., was under control. The management declares that great praise is due to the miners, whose prompt efforts averted a considerable loss. The damage is not extensive, and an early resumption of work is 'expected.
