CANOE SWAMPED

A LUCKY ESCAPE Had it not been for the promptitude of two members of the Harbour Board pilot staff, Messrs. J. Gruhnah and J. Reid, death from drowning would probably have been the lot of a youthful canoeist early on Saturday afternoon. It appears that the boy, who.se name could not be ascertained, was cruising some 400 yards off No. 1 Queen’s Wharf, when sudden.lv the craft became swamped. The hoy commenced to swim towards the wharf, and fortunately it was not long before his plight was observed by Mr. W. Moncrieff, who was on dutv in the tower. Messrs. Grunnah and Reid immediately launched a dinghy and rescued the bov, who was then quite exhausted, and floating on bis back. ■ Artificial respiration was applied, and the boy was able to proceed home unassisted.
