LIQUOR REVENUE FALLING OFF The liquor traffic makes the false assertion that it yields 2J millions in revenue. It would be a thousand times too dear at that, even if it did. But it nover has yielded that amount ‘ —never has yielded more than a bit over half that amount. And this year, in spite of duties being doubled, it is yielding less than ever. Here are tho official figures, supplied by tfie Comptroller of Customs, for the six months ended September 30; 1922:— Six months Ended September 30. Revenue. £ Spirits 354,240 Imported ale, beer, and stout 1,041 Wines 12,364 N\Z. brewed beer 274,515 Total for six months .... £642,160 This gives an annual revenue of £1,284,320, or rather over £75,500 less than tho 1921 revenue. Twenty years ago the liquor revenue was over 10 per cent, of the total revenue, today it is only a little over 4J per cent, of the total revenue. But of the £1,359,856 paid into the Treasury, it is conservative to say that over £1,000,000 has to be paid out again to meet police, hospital, and charitable expenditure caused by drink. And this doos not mend bro*ken hearts and ruined homes; it does not repair the havoc and misery produced by drink. There is no real revenue from liquor—the traffic is a perpetual charge on the communitv gaining its profit at the expense of human lives and Dominion progress. Vote it nut.
