The Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting opened to-day in fine weather land 'before a large attendance. The totalisator handled £88,938, against £77,582 on the corresponding day last year. A great field of twenty-one horses lined up, for the Trial Hurdle race. When the field settled down Westminster was in front, followed by Triboulet and Wharepca. With half a mile gone, Wharepoa ran into second place, while Westminster was still going confidently. At the bend for home, Dempsey could be seen going through the field and Miss Melva was also improving her position, but none-of them could make any impreseion on Westminster, who won decis- i

ively by four lengths. Miss Melva beat Dempsey by half a length for second place, while Wharepoa had to be content with fourth place. Highland was made a hot favourite in the Great Northern Guineas, but could only get second place. She-; bang was the first to break the line/ with Luciu's and Refinement close at hand. Highland was also lying handy, and Matine© occupied a good position. At the bend for home, Lucius was in command, with Highland a.nd Matinee in close, pursuit. A great race up the straight resulted in a win for Matinee bv half a length, Highland beating Lucius by a neck for second place. Refinement was fourth.

Queen March was the public fancy for the Welcome Stakes, and she iully justified the confidence placed' in her by recording a five-lengths’ victory. ■ Director came with a great rush at the'’finish, and beat Miss Egypt by a neck for second place. Uralia was fourth, beating Caress in the run up the straight. Pittsworth carried the most money in the Hunters’ Steeplechase, but he fell when “half the trip had been covered. Maud Wilson led over the first hurdle, with Never Despair in dose, company, and Silverton lying handy. Never Despair and Maud Wilson continued in the front position until the straight was entered, when Silverton ranged himself alongside them. A fine battle to the post ended in a win for Never Despair by a neck,/ a like distance separating Silverton from Maud Wilson. Foxglove was fourth.

I The Shorts handicap resolved itself j into a desperate struggle between > Lady Ridicule, Royal Blood, and Tama-a-roa. When the barrier went up, Royal Blood rushed to the front, with Lady Ridicule after him. These two were fighting it out gamely up the straight, when Tama-a-roa came with a great dash. He managed to get his head in front of Royal Blood at the post, but Lady Ridicule beat him by a neck for first place. Queen Abbey was fourth. Royal Present was made favourite . in the Mitchelson C,up, but Income and • Insurrection were also well backed. Perfect Day was rushed to the front . as soon as the bander went up, and le<l for half the trin. Then Income came through the field in great style, half a mile from home, and Insurrection. who also had been lying far back, and Royal Present, also moved up. Income was in a good position on the rails as the field turned for home, but Royal Present and'lnsurrection dashed after him. Income, however, was not to be denied, and gradually drawing away, won by two and a half lengths from Royal Present, who beat Insurrection by three lengths. Poteen was fourth. In tho Hobson Handicap, Sheffield took command at the early stage of the. race, and led into the straight. Here Amiform came through with a brilliant run, and secured the verdict by a length from Sheffield, who beat Marble Glass for second place by; half a length. Polini was fourth. Dovelet was made favourite in tho Flying Handicap, but several others were well supported. Dovelet, who drew the inside position, went to the front, at the start, closely followed by Infante, and Tinohoro. Dovelet was still leading when heads were turned for home, but Infante nowmade a brilliant effort, and, wearing down Dovelet, secured a win by a head.
