ss. 3d. PER BOTTLE. The official statistics of the Comptroller of Customs for tho year 1921 show that whisky imported, including Invoice price and duty, cost less than ss. 3d. per bottlo, taking the liquor traffic’s own basis of 7 bottles to the gallon. That is the whisky now being sold. The National Council of the Licensed Trade is challenged to prove the contrary. Will it answer Yes or 1 On whisky now being sold, only 2s. 6d. per bottle duty Bas been paid. The National Council is challenged to prove that 4s. lUd. duty has been paid on all whisky sold retail since January 1, 1922. The new duty came into force November, 1921. The National Council is further challenged to reveal what quantity of snirit was taken out of , an 4 cleared ex wharf at the old rate of duty in order to escape the increased duty, the "N.Z. Times” havmg on January 5, 1922, stated that: It is estimated that at least 18 months or a two years’ supply was thus released from bond.” . , • The liquor traffic increased the price of whisky 2s. 6d. per bottle on the pretence that the increased duty ‘must necessarily compel an increase In price to the consumer.” s'ho liquor traffic had not paid the increased/ duty; it took the 2s. 6d. from the customer and the Government got nothing.— N.Z.
