WELLINGTON CLUB LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY MISS GAMBRILL Tho semi-finals of tho ladies’ championship for tho Wellington Golf Club wore played on Wednesday, when Miss Gambrill beat Miss Bell 4 up and 3, and Miss Brandon beat Mrs. Weston 7 and 5. Tho game between Miss Gambrill and Miss Bell provided, as was fully expected, a great exhibition of golf. Tho display given by Miss Gambrill was especially brilliant, and for Miss Bell to be defeated by any ouo playing up to "such form as shown by her opponent was no disgrace. Miss Gambrill did tho Bth hole in four, two under bogey, and tho first nine holes in 39, which is equal to bogey. Her win was well merited. The game between Miss Brandofi and Mrs. Weston was most decisive. Mrs. Weston did not seem to be at all comfortable with her wooden clubs, and on the day she was no match for her very steady opponent. Tho final was played yesterday in a very strong wind, and ended in a victory for Miss Gambrill ovei k Miss Brandon by 2up and eno to play. The start was anything but promising, both ladies taking 6 for the first holo, for which bogey is 4. Miss Gambrill. playing steady golf, won the second and third in bogey, 5 and 3, respectively.. The noxt hole was halved, and Miss Brandon reduced her opponent’s lead to 1 up by taking the fifth- , in 5. Miss Gambrill, driving into the rough, did not holo out. She made amends, however, by winning the 6th, 7th, and 9th, whilst losing the Bth. Miss Gajnbrill was thus 3up at tho turn. Maintaining a high standard of golf, of which the outstanding feature was an all-roiind steadiness, she created a surprise by doing the 10th, a long holo, in 3, two under bogey. It was done as the result of holing out an approach from the edge of the green. Not to be put off her game by such sensational happenings, Miss Brandon, after halving tho 11th hole, won tho noxt two. Both ladies had settled down to their top form, and were now so evenly matched that the next four holes wore halved in bogey. This left Miss Gambrill the winner by 2 up and 1, thereby enabling hert.to add to a record which includes the championship of the Miramar Club and that of the Wellington Club, JUNIOR. The game between Mrs. S. Krikcaldie and Mrs. 11. Nathan for the final of the ladies’ junior championship was a very evenly-contested one. In the first half Mrs. Nathan held a slight advantage, being 1 up at the turn. From thence onwards, Mrs. Kirkcalclie, playing more up to her usual form, took a hand in affairs, and soon established a lead of 4 up. Mrs Nathan, in nowise disheartened by tho unexpected turn of 'fortune, showed that she was still to bo reckoned with, and, playing a plucky uphill fight, won tho last 3 holes in bogey, finishing all square on the 18th green. The 19th hole was halved, and it was not until on tho 20th green, Mrs. Nathan missed a putt, that the game, was decided in favour of Mrs. Kirkcaldie. In tho course of the afternoon Miss Duncan, tho ladies’ president, entertained the lady members to afternoon tea at the club house, when the prizes were presented to tho successful contestants. Miss Duncan also announced that she was giving a prize to.be played for on the three next Wednesdays, for the best net score in three medal competitions.
