A deliberate attempt to bum down the Avondale public school, situated in Great North Itoad, appears to have been made last Wednesday night about 8 o’clock (states the Auckland “Star”), and it was only the prompt turn-out by the recently-formed. Avondale Fire Brigade that saved the building from being enveloped in flames, inie incipient blaze in the basement was observed by some passers-by, who lost no time in summoning tho brigade. The brigade soon had the fire under control and little damage was done to the premises. On an inspection being made it was discovered that a pile of inflammable material had been placed underneath'the flooring and set alight. The portion of the school where the outbreak occurred is nearly 40 years firemen was a creditable one indeed, old, so that the save by the volunteer
