BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS. A meeting of tho Eastbourne Borough Council was held ton Friday, the Mayor (Mr. F. H. Mather) presiding. There were also present: — Council’ors H. McGill, T. H. ‘'ho’dt, ,C. A. Marnnis. C. Hartridtre, I. Pdcher, W. H. Bennett and T. Giles. It was anounced bv the Mayor that the by-laws had been completed and that copies were on the table for the use of councillors. He took advantage of the opportunity to convey the council’s thanks and appreciation .to Mr. Pilcher for the' amount of time he had devoted to their compilation. Mr. Mather’s statement that it was intended to present Mr. Pilcher with a specially bound cony was received with applause. Councillor Pilcher feelingly responded. The general manager (Mr. R. B. Wittv) teported that the top-dressing on the reserves had been completed and ‘thnt the cricket pitches would bo available for play in November,. Levelling for tennis courts was approaching completion. Tenders for fencing and asphalting wnnl-d be invited at an early date. The statement from the coul depot showed that the _ receipts and expenditure from April 1 to Pentcmber 16 were respectively £641 Is. 6d., nnd £4-48 9s. 9d Building permits to the value of £493.T had been issued, making a total from'Aoril lof £16,433. Regarding the collection of rates it . was reported that £1875 JBs. had been received since the demands were sent outReferring to the. activities of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board, the Mayor said that an engineer had been appointed to commence the preparation of the preliminary plans and carry out surveys in connection with the reticulation of the districts under their control. It would be seen that no time was being, lost and that the work was proceeding satisfactorilyProbably there would be a. diversify of opinion in Potone and Lower Hutt on the question of discarding gas in favour of the other lighting, but. he was confident that; when the time arrived every house in tho borough of Eastbourne would have electric light.
